Gentle Giants Slaughtered

Whaling is an extremely important issue since it’s affecting the whole world and the food chain.

Whaling is the cruel slaughter of whales for their oil, meat and much more. The practice is illegal and is worthy of time in jail. The only three countries that continue commercial whaling are Norway, Iceland and Japan. Out of these countries, Japan is whaling the most.

Ever since industrial whaling fleets emerged in the 17th century, the whale population all over the world has dropped dramatically to the point where some are endangered, such as the Sei Whale, Fin Whale, Humpback whales and hundreds of others.

According to whale biologist Eben Turner, he states, “If industrial whaling continues it will disturb the food chain and possibly make some whales become extinct.” The way these gentle giants will affect the food chain is that without whales their prey will have a population surplus.

Even though commercial whaling was banned in 1986 by most countries, Japan alone has caused more than 2000 whales to be killed in a year. What remains are the carcasses of whales and their by products.

If whale deaths continue at this rate, then most whales will become extinct rapidly.

There used to be plenty of reasons to have commercial whaling, such as for whale oil (which burns extremely well), whale fat (was once part of a medieval delicacy) and meat. But in this modern age of electricity and internet, there is no valid reason to continue commercial whaling. There is no need to use whale oil for candles as we now have electricity, we don't need their fat because we shouldn't be eating these unhealthy delicacies and we don't need to consume whale meat because it is not a common part of our diet any more.

Whaling is a global issue because it requires all countries to stop this cruel action. The countries that are still whaling hide behind a veil of excuses to keep murdering these defenceless, giants of the sea .

We need more people to advocate for them, rather than ignore their plight.
