Whaling has been around for thousands of years and over the course if that time period it has chanded dramatically.

The original reason humans started whaling was for their meat since there would've been plenty of it on the calm colossi.

During the industrial revolution, like hundreds of other things, whaling changed from throwing a spear at a whale to harpoon guns that were much more effective. Do to how effective these hunting techniques were most whales are now endangered.

Whaling started to decrease after the 1930s since they didn't have much usefulness anymore, most nations banned commercial whaling during the 1980s. The only three countries that continue industrial whaling are Japan, Iceland and Norway.

As you can see by the picture above, the ancient whaling tools were quite crude, because of this ancient whaling was much more difficult and the whales had a fair chance to survive the assault. Nowdays it's much easier to kill them due to modern technology and other advancements.

During the 1600-1900s most nations had entire fleets devoted to whaling such as the one below. The main reason for this is that since back then they didn't have electric lights our ancestors relied on candles, because of this they hunted whales for their oil due to how effeciently it burns.
